4062 1952-06-05 Paddington
GWR Star class 4-6-0 No 4062 Malmesbury Abbey waits to leave Paddington with the 10.10pm down postal on June 5, 1952.
Peter Kerslake adds "Even in their last years the remaining "Stars" still in service were well liked and respected by footplate men and capable of working fast duties such as shown here on the nighttime Postal down from Paddington to Bristol.
Allocated at this period in time to Swindon Depot "Malmesbury Abbey" is recorded as having worked the tightly timed "Merchant Venturer" express between Temple Meads and Paddington on at least one occasion during her last years, with Bristol Bath Road's sister engine 4056 "Princess Margaret" being a favourite at her home shed for lengthy runs down to Plymouth, and even making it all the way to Penzance in the mid 'fifties.
4062 has been turned out in fine condition by Old Oak's cleaners, her paintwork glistening under Paddington's lamps for this Top Link duty . "
