4062 1938c Shrewsbury

GWR Star class 4-6-0 No 4062 Malmesbury Abbey stands in the centre road at Shrewsbury in c1938. Shirt-button totem on tender.

Peter Kerslake says "What an absolutely first class portrait of 4062, "Malmesbury Abbey" here on what appears to be the through road at the northern end of Shrewsbury station, doubtless having worked up on a Great Western duty and possibly waiting to add the coach seen here to the front of the stock just visible on the northbound platform road.
Shrewsbury would have been the changeover point between Great Western and London Midland and Scottish locomotives, a practice which continued in both directions for many years thereafter.
Built in May of 1922 "Malmesbury Abbey" received "Elbow"outside steam pipes following overhaul at Swindon in March of 1950 and was withdrawn whilst allocated to Swindon M.P.D, in November of 1956 .
At the time of her demise she was one of just three "Stars" remaining in service, with 4061 "Glastonbury Abbey" being withdrawn from Stafford Road in March of 1957 and the last of the class , 4056 "Princess Margaret" outliving all the rest until she too was condemned in October of 1957 from Bristol Bath Road."
