4017 1920s Old Oak Common
GWR Star 4-6-0 No 4017 Knight of the Black Eagle on shed at Old Oak Common in c1925.
Peter kerslake says "4017 "Knight of Liege", seen here at Old Oak Common in the 1920's had originally been named "Knight of the Black Eagle" but the name change took place at the start of the first war for diplomatic reasons.
The "Stars" were the mainstay of the tightly timed express services between Paddington and the Westcountry at this time, often loaded to twelve or more coaches with a timing of just three hours for the 174 miles between the Capital and Exeter St. Davids ,together with just two hours allowed on the Bristol Temple Meads services running some 118 miles each way.
4017 ended its days as a Swindon engine in November, 1949".
