Unidentified North Eastern Railway W.Worsdell 'S' class 4-6-0. Class of forty locomotives built at Gateshead from 1899 to 1909. All withdrawn by 1938.

Although this is an imperfect photograph, it is nonetheless a fine period view of one of Britain's earliest 4-6-0 classes in sparkling original condition. The fascinating loftily positioned signal cabin and it's signals add to the interest at Benton Quarry on the ECML in the northern outskirts of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
