NER 838 1906 Ingleby Incline

NER 838 1906 Ingleby Incline

North Eastern Railway Fletcher '398' class 0-6-0 No. 838. Built by R & W Hawthorn of Newcastle in 1873 and withdrawn in 1913.

The Edward Fletcher '398s' appeared in a multitude of guises over their long lives. Multiple rebuilds and variations in fittings ensured that hardly any two of the 395 locomotives built looked the same! 838 is seen in 1912 at the foot of Ingleby Incline that brought iron ore and calcine dust to be loaded for onward shipment. The incline closed in 1929.
