NER 66 1902-04 Jarrow Slake

NER 66 1902-04 Jarrow Slake

North Eastern Railway '66' (LNER 'X1') class 2-2-4 compound Tank No. 66 'Aerolite'. Built at Gateshead in April 1902, withdrawn in June 1934 and preserved.

It would be a poor steam entuhusiast who could not instantly recognise 'Aerolite', a prized exhibit since withdrawal in 1934 at the National Railway Museum. The NER has officially recorded 66's third and final rebuilding as a 2-2-4 Tank in this 1902 photograph. The fine saloon No. 1661 was permanently allocated to No. 66 for it's duties as an engineer's inspection vehicle.
