Ex-North Eastern Railway T.W.Worsdell 'H1' (LNER 'J78') class 0-6-0 Crane Tank No. 590. Built at Gateshead in 1888 as NER No. 590 and withdrawn in 1938.

One of the joys of visiting railway sheds and works was the discovery of obscure and strange-looking locomotives that were never seen 'out on the line'. This fascinating little crane tank was one such delight at York MPD, seen here in September 1929. Note the unusual wheel spacing, designed to keep the centre of gravity evenly distributed when carrying a load. 'Not to exceed 50 cwts.' it states on the jib.
