45542 1960s Edge Hill
Edge Hill yards viewed with Edge Hill No. 4 signal box on the extreme left as a ‘Patriot’ is about to move off from Tuebrook sidings towards St Helens with a train of empty mineral wagons, a job totally unsuited to an express engine with 6 ft. 9 ins. driving wheels. This picture was taken when No. 45542 was allocated to Preston between November 1958 and July 1961. The track leading off to the left is to the shed which is immediately behind the camera and in the distance just above this the double junction is were the main lines to Wavertree and then Crewe branch off. The main ‘Grid Iron’ gravity worked sidings are at the higher level to the right of the ‘Patriot’ and the Wagon repair works are behind the signal. In the distance adjacent to the trains brake van is Edge Hill No. 3 signal box with the goods depot warehouses situated beyond the bridge.
