Newport High Street Station, with Up freight running through - View SW, towards Cardiff, Western Valleys etc. In the 1950s and 1960s freight trains were running constantly through here - but it would seem that few passengers were about, at least on this day. The Class F freight - its tail hardly out of the four-track tunnel just west of the station, is headed by four GWR bogie bolsters loaded with steel bar, a staple traffic of the main line here. The motive power is '38xx' 2-8-0 No. 3831 new to traffic in December 1940 a long term Birmingham Division engine at the time allocated to Tyseley, of course this would be no stranger to South Wales, but it would normally come off at the Severn Tunnel yards. Like several of its classmates it will travel north to Croes Newydd for its final allocation, being withdrawn from there in September 1963.
