3824 1962-06-08 west of Hayes & Harlington

View westward on 8th June 1962 at Hayes & Harlington near Dawley Box, towards West Drayton, Reading and the West on the ex-GW Paddington - Reading etc. main line. This is close to where the Heathrow Express line (opened 1/98, fully 23/6/98) now branches off to the Airport from the main line. The Class H Up freight is headed by September 1940 built 2-8-0 No. 3824 and clearly not having to work hard as the smoke drifts off the cut of 19 mineral wagons, the third of which is a cupboard door vehicle built to serve in France. Later in the train there is merchandise traffic, empty cattle trucks and even parcels vans bringing up the rear. 3824 would be well used to the main line to Acton being a long term Newport Ebbw Junction allocated engine, ending its days off there in June 1964.
