3836 1964-04-17 Neath
3836 seen here in 1964 at Neath had the honour of being the last of her class to remain in service , being condemned in 1965 .
A nicely heaped load of good Welsh coal fills her 3000 gallon tender and someone has put a " 3836 " on the tender bufferbeam , with a couple of oil cans visible on the running plate .
Eighty three of the " 2884 " series of later engines in the class came from Swindon Works between 1938 and 1942 when Mr . Collett continued with Mr. Churchward's original basic design , albeit with a number of modifications , those later engines being numbered between 2884 to 3866 .
The first withdrawal was 2800 herself in 1958 and no less than fifteen have since made it into preservation., namely seven of the original " 2800 " series together with eight of the later " 3800 " variation.
