2846 1950s Newton Abbot

2846 1950s Newton Abbot

Heading westwards through Newton Abbot and past its home shed 2846 may well be heading down to Totnes and beyond or possibly may be taking the Torquay and Kingswear line at Aller Junction instead .
If the freight is bound for the former route it will have Dainton bank ahead , with its daunting one in thirty six gradient , and 2846 will undoubtably require the assistance of one of Newton Abbot's heavy 2-6-2 engines stationed at Aller Junction as a banker to the summit .
Newton Abbot and Laira " Manors " , such as the one seen here in characteristic grubby condition , were tasked with pilot duties to passenger workings in both directions between here and Plymouth , often working between the two locations throughout the day , particularly during the Summer months when loadings on the express pasenger workings were particularly heavy.
