3835 1950s Birmingham Snow Hill
One of the Collett 2-8-0s with side window cab No.3835 drags a southbound freight of ironstone empties up the incline from Hockley tunnel in the late 1950s. These would be returning from the former Stewart & Lloyd’s steelworks at Bilston to Wroxton, just north of Banbury, where the Oxfordshire Ironstone Co had its extensive quarries. The 1942-built engine was shedded at Cardiff Canton between March 1957 and June 1960. To the right of the train were the New Yard Sidings and in the distance Northwood Street Sidings where carriage stock was kept.
Ed Purcell remembers "The 2-8-2Ts were reasonably frequent locos on these trains for a while in 61 / 62."
