3818 1962c Tilehurst

No. 3818 sometime in the 1960s at Tilehurst with a Down Class E express freight, partly fitted with the automatic brake operative on not less than four braked vehicles. Jim Carter the photographer recorded that it was heading to Didcot and the load includes three empty ‘crocodile’ heavy bogie well wagons. It was practice to return these empty to strategic positions on the system, so no doubt they will be heading for Swindon. The loco is allocated to Newport 86A which dates the image between May 1961 and May 1964 when it moved to Pontypool Road. This loco was one of the handful of 2-8-0s re-allocated to Southall for the last residuals of WR steam in the capital between May and June 1965.
