2811 1957-05-15 Swindon Works

The heavy freight loco is newly ex works and has been parked next to a green BR standard tender, giving the effect of a modernised 28xx!

This fine view of 2811 , which my 1956 shedbook says was allocated to Severn Tunnel Junction , shows her nicely repainted following overhaul here at Swindon and waiting to be reunited with her correct tender , locomotives going through the Works " A " Shop always having their tenders removed beforehand for attention elsewhere.
I doubt whether she will remain in this fine condition once she returns to duty , and 2811 was one of Mr. Churchward's original design of the Heavy Freight class , but she has by this date been fitted with outside steam pipes and curved drop ends to the front frames , two of the numerous modiifications applied to the early examples of the class as the years passed.
Originally having been introduced by Mr . Churchward in 1905 , later examples of the class continued to come from Swindon up to 1942 with Mr . Collett' s modifications and improvements to the basic design resulting in the class remaining in service until the last one in the shape of 3836 was condemned in 1965 .
