D0280 1967-04 London Paddington
After initial trials on the Western Region, the Brush prototype Type 4 diesel-electric D0280 Falcon went to Sheffield Darnall in April 1962 and worked Sheffield Victoria to King's Cross trains including The Master Cutler and Sheffield Pullman. Later that year it was switched to freight duties, before returning to passenger work the following year. Falcon then spent almost a year at the Brush Lougborough Works pending a decision on its future, before a five-year lease was agreed with British Railways in January 1965. After a full overhaul, and repainted in two-tone green livery, Falcon was allocated to the Western Region, which had extensive experience of its Maybach engines on the diesel-hydraulic fleet. It was based at Bristol Bath Road and was used on Paddington to Bristol services as shown at Paddington in April 1967.
