My first attempt at poetry 1960 when I was 13.

Gone are the days of the great steam engines;
Gone are the days when they reigned supreme'
Progress and new invention
These have turned them into a dream.
Swiftly passing from this age
leaving a story on history's page
the giant engines go roaring by
no more the steam clouds in the sky.
No more will I see them streaking past
to thrill at their shrill whistles blast;
never again to see them shine
like thunder rolling down the line.
Engines that pulled many a train
never to be seen again
condemned by economy
ne'er to see another day.
These engines that belched smoke and fire
melted down on their funeral pyre;
the hard-worked metal giving way
to engines of the present day.
Now, to see a scrapyard full
of engines that used to pull
passengers and fitted freights
the story's past, progress dictates
