On the Portishead Branch. Currently open to goods traffic to Royal Portbury Dock but it is proposed to re-open the line through to Portishead for passenger traffic. An interesting view here at the site of the former Nightingale Valley Halt, closed in September 1932 on the line to Portishead with traffic on the Portway visible on the far side of the Avon , the river clearly at a very low tide . This view shows well the massive thirty foot drop in the River level of the Avon between high and low tides , the second highest recorded diffference in levels worldwide, and way back in 1865 there was a railway line opened on the far side of the River Avon from below the bridge here at Hotwells where that mass of vegetation is apparent extending from Avonmouth, but it was bypassed in 1877 when a new line took the route of today's line from Sneyd Junction through Clifton to Temple Meads.

Bristol St. Philips Marsh used its former G.W.R. Diesel Railcars frequently on the Portishead line but scheduled passenger services ended on the branch on 5th September 1964 and the line is today a vital freight link to the extended docking facilities at Portbury.
