70015 1960s Patricroft

70015 1960s Patricroft

Train reporting number 1L31, the 16.15 Manchester Exchange to Glasgow Central. Allocated when earlier on the Western Region in the fifties to Old Oak Common, 70015 Apollo was the first of the initial allocation of ten Britannias for that Region, joined later by a further five sent to Cadiff Canton. Whilst the Canton footplatemen soon took to their new steeds, the same cannot be said for the men at Old Oak or at Laira where the majority of those initial ten were allocated from new, and it took some while before the Britannias were really regarded by the crews in the same way as were the Kings and Castles. Laira lost its allocation as the Diesels took over the principal workings in the late ' fifties, and eventually all the Western Region members of the class were to be found, albeit for just a short period of time, at Cardiff Canton before going to the Midland Region from where this picture is taken
