70036 1960s Lune Gorge

70036 1960s Lune Gorge

Kingmoor ‘Britannia’ 70036 Boadicea in the Lune Gorge approaching Dillicar with a southbound Class ‘H’ freight. Formerly an Eastern Region engine, it had been transferred to Carlisle Upperby at the end1963, moving to Kingmoor in February 1964. The train is interesting, consisting of three sheeted brick wagons followed by various products of English steelworks loaded on bogie bolster and plate wagons. It looks like the rubber sheet fitted between the cab roof and the tender on a ‘Britannia’ has come loose and the crew have pushed it to the side and partially out of the cab to give them more space on the footplate. The buildings on the skyline were the start of the 'railway' village of Tebay, as opposed to the original rural village about 1/2 mile further on which was renamed Old Tebay. The large building is 'The Junction Hotel' which overlooked the narrow road leading down to the railway station. This is shown on a large-scale map of Tebay on the front board of Farewell to North-West Steam, Ivo Peters ed.Mac Hawkins, David & Charles, 1992. The map is dated 1920 and the name is clearly stated as Junction Hotel.
