70024 1960s Wigan
A former Western Region ‘Britannia’, as shown by the handholds on the smoke deflectors which replaced the handrails, No. 70024 Vulcan with a southbound parcels has just passed under Cemetery Road bridge No. 31, north of Springs Branch Shed. The picture was taken while No. 70024 was allocated to Aston, between October 1961 and April 1963. Some hardy stalwart has taken the trouble to give Vulcan a bit of special attention to its smokebox door fittings as this rather nice shot shows, although the engine is a long way from its original hunting grounds down in the far West in its early days in the early ' fifties. Allocated to Plymouth 's Laira shed from new in October, 1951 the engine worked down to Penzance and back on a regular basis, often on the Cornish Riviera express as well as taking express passenger workings frm Plymouth to Paddington. In company with its sisters 70024 went to Cardiff Canton from December1956 until it ended up on the Midland Region as seen here, initially being shedded at Aston in September1961.
