NBR 381 1925-07 Darlington Works

In July 1925, the LNER celebrated the centenary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in some style. Over 50 locomotives ancient and modern, were exhibited at Darlington Works and also took part in a 'cavalcade' on the Darlington to Eaglescliffe line.

No.3 in this procession was this North British Railway Thomas Wheatley 'E' class 0-6-0 No. 381 of May 1868 vintage. In spite of being rebuilt twice (in 1892 and 1916) Cowlairs Works attempted to recreate an approximation of its original appearance, though with much 'artistic licence' and not a little inaccuracy in both appearance and livery! Unfortunately, it was hastily consigned to the scrapheap following these celebrations...
