Three of the ten Western Region ‘15xx’ pannier tanks were sold to the National Coal Board in 1961 and after refurbishment at Andrew Barclay were used at Coventry Colliery from the summer of 1962, with No.1509 not arriving until March 1963. The Hawksworth designed engines, introduced in 1949, were the last in a long line of Great Western panniers and one of only two classes with outside cylinders, the other being the ‘1366’ class. They were best known for their work on empty stock duties at Paddington. No.1509, pictured at the colliery in 1969, and No.1502 survived until 1970 and were then used as a source of spare parts for the third engine, No.1501, which was preserved and is to be found today working on the Severn Valley Railway. No.1509 was not so fortunate and was scrapped by John Cashmore Ltd at Great Bridge in October 1970.
