A feature of the ten " 1500 " class of " 24 hour " heavy shunting Pannier Tanks was the use of welding by Swindon in their construction , especially in the design of their water tanks with their absence of rivets as seen here .
Although the duty shown here is that for which the members of the class was so familiar , in the mid ' fifties six of the total of ten were allocated to Motive Power Depots away from Old Oak , with Southall , Didcot , Severn Tunnel Junction and Newport Ebbw Junction all having one apiece , whilst Newport Pill had two and Old Oak had the remaining four .
Not designed or capable of high speed running , due to the massive front overhang and resultant unsteady riding characteristics , the little engines had the capability of taking substantial rakes of empty stock in and out of Paddington and were popular with their footplatemen
