55053 1955-06 St.Rollox Works
Ex-Highland Railway P. Drummond 'W' (LMS '0P') class 0-4-4 Tank No. 55053. Built at Lochgorm in December 1905 as HR No. 45 and withdrawn in November 1956.
You are looking at the last ex-Highland Railway locomotive to survive in the BR era. The wonderful paintwork is a fitting testament to the magnificent final overhaul received at St. Rollox before tragedy struck this little gem of a locomotive on 16th November 1956. The leading coupled axle broke and a detached wheel ran along the ballast. but thankfully 55053 did not derail. After recovery, it lingered on in St Rollox Works for another fourteen months but was eventually scrapped in February 1958. A sad end to the Highland Railway's great legacy.
