The Clayton Type 1s were built at Derby from mid-1962 until early 1965. The centre cab locomotives were supposed to be the British Railways standard Type 1 design taking over from the single ended English Electric Type 1s. The first ones were delivered to the Scottish Region but severe problems emerged which caused that Region to refuse to accept any more new locomotives until these were rectified. Delivery was stopped in February 1963 and as the locomotives came off the production line they were stored at St.Andrews Goods yard in Derby or in sidings opposite the shed, many not even fully painted and numbered. It is thought that altogether over twenty, including Nos.D8508,8514-19/21 and others up to No.D8540, were held there for several months up to around June 1963 as shown in this rare photograph. Although extensive modifications were carried out, withdrawals began in July 1968 and the whole class was gone by December 1971, with many having a working life of less than five years. Not surprisingly when more Type 1s were ordered, British Railways went back to the reliable English Electric Type 1s.
