Clayton No. D8529 is seen on October 10th 1968 passing the exit of Eden Valley Up Loop which had just been shortened after the closure of Clifton & Lowther signal box in June. Ken Harper was signalman at Eden Valley Jn. at the time. The Clayton is probably outbased at Tebay as the shed remained open for a year or so after the end of steam. This would be a ballast train working moving a motley selection of engineers wagons for the next job.It is just two days before the Clayton was withdrawn for the first time, as was typical at the time it was re-instated on 2 November only to be withdrawn again by the end of the year. However an overhaul was granted in 1969 and it was destined to be one of the last in service.
