One of the two ‘Jubilee’ 4-6-0s rebuilt with taper boilers in 1942 is seen passing Factory Lane Preston two decades later. With only 4 coaches in tow this is a featherweight train for such a powerful locomotive. It is surprising that no further members of the class were similarly treated as the two rebuilds were highly regarded.
No 45736 ‘Phoenix’ (5A) seen here, and sister No 45735 ‘Comet’ were both withdrawn from service in September 1964.
