Ex-LMS Stanier 'Jubilee' class 4-6-0 No. 45689 'Ajax'. Built at Crewe in February 1936 as LMS No. 5689 and withdrawn in December 1964.

The 'Jubilees' were more likely to be seen on freight than passenger duties in their latter days, as witnessed here in May 1964. 'Ajax' is heading a lengthy southbound freight and is approaching Preston station passing the fine signal gantries seen at the rear of the train.
