45734 1958 Birmingham New Street

‘Jubilee’ No.45734 Meteor is blowing off at the safety valves as it waits to depart from Platform 3 with ‘The Midlander’ to Coventry and London Euston in 1958. The Up train used the Stour Valley route from Wolverhampton to Birmingham, instead of the Grand Junction route taken by the Down train, and reached Euston in 2 hours 10 minutes from New Street. No.45734 had been shedded at Bushbury since July 1951, having had two previous spells there, and with its shedmates was a regular performer on the Euston expresses. A Birmingham Carriage & Wagon Company Diesel Multiple Unit waiting to work a Coventry service is just visible on the left of the picture and the rear of the Queen’s Hotel is an impressive backdrop. It must have been quite hard to sleep in the rooms on this side!
