45606 1950s Shap

45606 1950s Shap

On the W65 10-20 Euston-Perth Colin Ryder says "45606 "Falkland Islands" is seen passing Shap Wells and about to enter the first of the cuttings before the summit. 11 coaches on and no banker!
All the coaches are LMS Stanier period vehicles in carmine and cream livery, so more likely to be mid-1950s than very early or very late 1950s. 45606 was shedded at 1B Camden July - December 1952 and then again from June 1954 to December 1959 but inbetween was off Edge Hill.

No smoke from the chimney, but that might be explained because it is a remarkably fine day. I wonder just how fast 45606 will have been travelling! " He continues "There are several things strange about this photo: no banker, speed of train and no visible smoke: it may have been re-starting after being held at the Intermediate Block signal lower down the incline and the guard is looking out of his window supporting this theory.

But the strangest thing is that this photo is of a Jubilee pulling ELEVEN coaches up Shap WITHOUT a banker! There is a photo of 45578 “United Provinces” in early BR days in “Eric Treacy’s LMS”, Jenkinson & Whitehouse, OPC, 1988, p.58 on this working without banker, but with only nine coaches on. All the other photos of this working that I can find in 5 of my books have either a Royal Scot, rebuilt Patriot or a 'Duchess' on this working. To quote Antony Darnbrough in his book "West Coast Steam", Ian Allan, 1988, p.72, "One of the hardest class 7 diagrams of the day - and one which I never saw worked by anything other than a (rebuilt) Royal Scot or Patriot from Crewe North shed - was the 10.20am Euston to Perth". This as caption to a photo of 45528 with 11 coaches on.
So, I think 45606 is possibly a replacement for a failed (more powerful) loco. 45606, in my humble opinion, just happened to be at Crewe, (or Warrington, or Preston) and available, whether it was a Camden or Edge Hill loco at the time cannot be determined with any certainty".
