45699 1950s Duffield
A 'Jubilee' far from its home shed of Bristol Barrow Road, No.45699 Galatea with what appears to be an excursion in the summer of 1958. It was one of the class sold for scrap to Woodham Bros at Barry and was bought from there to provide parts for sister engine 45690 Leander, but is now being restored for mainline operation.
45699 " Galatea " , built at Crewe in April of 1936 , had , like her sister engine 45690 " Leander " been saved for preservation by purchase from Dai Woodham's yards at Barry following her withdrawal in November of 1964 when she had been allocated for three years to Shrewsbury follwing reallocation to that Depot from Bristol Barrow Road in October of 1961.
Regarded shortly afer purchase as a hopeless restoration project " Galatea " went to Carnforth in the Spring of 1980 to be used initially as a donor engine for parts required in the restoration of " Leander " but as later sold on to the Severn Valley line from where a slow and lengthy restoration project commenced some seven years later in 1987 .
A subsequent move to Tyseley took place in 1995 , followed by a move to Carnforth in 2002 and a return to traffic in 2013 with frequent appearances on Enthusiasts' Specials on the Settle and Carlsle line , a line upon which many of the " Jubilees " had worked regularly in past years.
