45680 1953-10 New Street

Looking east in October 1953 under Queens Drive bridge and towards Worcester Street tunnel as Stanier Jubilee No.45680 Camperdown waits for an incoming train in the short siding immediately in front of No 2 Signal Box. This box, which had originally been built by the LNWR, controlled the 'Midland' side at this end of New Street station. Camperdown was shedded at Manchester Longsight from October 1947 until October 1960 when it was transferred to Edge Hill. The starting signal is a filthy LNWR bracket fitted with supplementary shunting signals below each of the full size arms. Note the signal ladder fitted in front of the main post and curving at the top this was standard LNWR practice. In the gloom in front of the Jubilee is a gangers trolley - it will soon need lifting out of the way.
