Wellingborough Station signal box was located between the Up Main (in front of the box) and Down Goods lines at the north end of Wellingborough station platforms and was a Midland Railway type 2b design which opened on 6th August 1893, replacing an 1870s signal box located on the down side of the line at the north end of the platforms. The signal box was extended to accomodate a replacement 48 lever Midland Railway Tappet frame which was installed on 4th July 1915. The signal box closed at 02:00 on 5th December 1987 when signalling between Sharnbrook and Market Harborough passed to Leicester signal box although it had ceased to signal trains on the goods lines on 18th October 1987 when the down goods line between Sharnbrook and Finedon Road was taken out of use
The nameboard is a London Midland and Scottish Railway post-1935 design
The wooden post carrying the home & distant signals on the up goods line also carries a white diamond which indicates to the driver that his train is occupying a track circuit that indicates his presence to the signalman
In front of the signal box is Wellingborough Junction signal box's up main home banner repeater signals. Both were made redundant when Wellingborough Junction signal box was closed on 13th November 1983. Wellingborough Junction signal box can just be seen in the distance over the top of Wellingborough Station signal box.
