45697 1967-04-29 Shipley

The triangular layout at Shipley Station had (inexplicably) platforms on only two of its three sides. There is however a belief that the Chapel graveyard just seen below the tree on the left is the reason. It had pre-dated the railway and the platform that might have faced it was omitted, out of either respect or possibly by insistence from the church. In recent times the platform on the third side has now been built because the chapel and its graveyard no longer exist! In April 1967, ex-LMS Stanier Jubilee 4-6-0 No. 45697 'Achilles' heads a down parcels train from Bradford Forster Square towards Skipton and beyond. 45697 was built at Crewe in Apr. 1936 as LMS No. 5697 and was withdrawn in Sept. 1967.
