D9005 1961-05-25 Ordsall Lane

Fresh out of Vulcan Foundry on its way to Doncaster, 'Deltic' No. D9005 is studied enviously by a local driver as it leaves Newton-le-Willows on 25th May 1961. The West Coast mainline had to struggle with its under-powered English Electric Type 4s for several more years as these complex 3,300 bhp locomotives were delivered to the East Coast route, albeit in lieu of electrification. Unfortunately for the London Midland Region, electric trains did not work through to Glasgow until May 1974. No. D9005 was named The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire in October 1963.
