The real mystery is why is it uncoupled from the train? The same train was photographed at Snow Hill earlier and there were no loco swaps at Leamington station and here it is taking water and another shot shows it backed onto the train. My first thought was that it could just be that it has used the connection between the LNWR line and the GW one but I would not have expected this to be used for transfer of express passenger locos. The only passenger trains using the connection were specials. I think the most likely explaination is that the WR were having difficulty in getting the bag of their water cranes into the tender, so the loco was temporarily uncoupled from its train to make it easier.
