On a main Down platform, as a relief express from Euston to Holyhead pulls in, hauled by 'Princess Royal' 4-6-2 No. 46209 'Princess Beatrice'. A typical Summer Saturday scene nearly 50 years ago, at an extremely busy station, with many boy train-spotters as well as passengers.

Peter Kerslake adds "Constructed in mid 1935 Princess Beatrice was in service until September 1962, one of six of the class which had a few years earlier been shedded at Crewe North, the remaining six being at Liverpool's Edge Hill.
Down the platform is a compressor standing by some repair work being undertaken to part of the platform."
