Backing down from Upperby before taking over a Glasgow-Birmingham train. Despite being less than two months left in service, 46211 Queen Maud was in charge of an express passenger train when photographed on 17th August 1961 about to depart south from Carlisle. Apart from several brief spells at Edge Hill during the late 1950s, the engine had spent the post-war years stationed at Crewe North and was carrying a 5A shed plate. It had the original non-combustion chamber boiler from 46200, rebuilt with a dome in 1935, and was fitted with AWS, the signal receiver guard being visible below the buffer beam with the battery box on the platform just in front of the cab and the main vacuum reservoir alongside the trailing splasher. No. 46211 was withdrawn during the week ending 7th October 1961.
