6205 Princess Victoria just north of Brinklow as indicated by the milepost showing a distance of 89 miles from Euston. It retained its crimson lake livery until December 1946 when it was apparently repainted in LMS lined black which it kept until it became the first ‘Lizzie’ to receive BR lined black in November 1948.

Ian Townend says "From the lining visible on the footplate the livery is still crimson lake in this photo. The cabside no. is in the post war high position so this can't be any earlier than 1946. Has anybody come across a photo showing this loco in the 1946 LMS lined black livery? " and "A superb shot of 6205 taken post 1946 when its cabside number had been moved to a higher position but still in crimson lake livery. It is stated that it received the 1946 LMS lined black but I have never seen a photo of it in this livery and I have my doubts that it did " and "Although stated to have received the LMS post war black livery there have been no published photos to support this claim. On the contrary there is photographic evidence to to support the view that it retained red livery until receiving LNWR black in 1948 and may have received BR no while still in red livery "

And Peter Kerslake adds "46205 " Princess Victoria " was unique in that during 1938 , for some unrecorded reason , its two sets of Walschaerts valve gear situated inside the frames and operating the valves to the two inside cylinders were removed, those inside valves being operated thereafter by the outside valve motion.

Despite gaining a reputation thereafter of being a rough riding engine , this modification was not reversed , and " Princess Victoria " remained so modified until her withdrawal in November , 1961"
