The Road to the Washer (RTW).


Progress was such that the locomotive seemed on the point of stalling several times but it just managed to keep its heavy train on the move. Time was available to take a third picture by walking further along the WPR line to the Denbeath box (4).
At this stage the 4’3” wheels of No. 16 were barely moving and the fireman was spreading sand to aid adhesion with good effect, as not once in this journey did the engine slip on the rails.
