47000 1953-04-25 Sheep Pasture
LMS Kitson designed '0F' class 0-6-0 Saddletank No. 47000. Built by Kitson of Leeds in November 1932 as LMS No. 7000 and withdrawn in October 1966. Just over 2 miles from Sheep Pasture Top to Middleton Bottom, but an intensively worked section of the line, with one engine in steam!
The 'High Peak Railtour' was jointly organised by MLS and SLS in April 1953 with about 130 passengers and run in four legs with different locomotives. Starting at Cromford Wharf, the workshops were inspected after which it was a stiff walk to ascend the Sheep-pasture incline. At the summit 47000 took the participants the 11 miles to the foot of Middleton incline. Foot power was again used to get to Middleton Top to look at the engine house and then a walk downhill into Wirksworth for the second leg! So successful was this tour that a repeat was organised in June 1953.
