31912 1963-03-02 Exeter St Davids

SR WC 4-6-2 No 34002 Salisbury with W 2-6-4T 31912 and a WR engine as it waits with the Ilfracombe portion of the 4.30pm to Exeter Central at Exeter St Davids on 2 March 1963.

Peter Kerslake says "Eight of the 'W' class of which 31912 seen here was a member were drafted down to Exmouth Junction from Eastleigh M.P.D. in November 1962 for banking and piloting duties between St. David's and Central stations to replace the "Z" class, but the 'W's' were not so well suited for those tasks and they were returned to Norwood Junction and Feltham depots after just twelve months at Exeter.
I do not quite understand how a Western Region Hall engine is train engine on this working from North Devon and it is too big to be used for crew training on services from Plymouth running on the North Dartmoor line, a 'Mogul' being the largest allowed".
