61755 1960 Markinch

61755 1960 Markinch

An interesting and rare shot of a Thornton K2 2-6-0 at work on the Leslie branch near Markinch at the location where the sidings ran off to serve the Haig bonded warehouse seen in the background. No. 61755 dated from July 1918 and was an émigré from Boston shed – one of ten of the class from various English sheds transferred to Scotland in 1951. No. 61755 was resident at Thornton from January 1952 until February 1957 when moved north to Kittybrewster shed. She received a side window cab in August 1953 during a Cowlairs works visit and her last visit there before moving north was during March and April 1956. Given her sparkling front end appearance and foliage on the trees the photograph was probably taken soon after her April ’56 return to Thornton. After a period at Kittybrewster she moved to Keith shed where she was withdrawn during November 1959. The viaduct in the right background is the 10arch (now listed) structure built in 1847 on the Cupar - Burntisland line and the signals on the left seen beyond No. 61755’s smokebox mark the approach to Markinch station.
