A classic quiz question for your railway enthusiast chums. Which British railway founded in 1912, used pre-grouping, post-grouping and BR steam and diesel locomotives was never nationalised and remained independent until its closure in 1981? At this mystery line's Thorganby Station, this April 1956 view shows a typical single coach working by ex-North Eastern Rly. W.Worsdell 'J25' class 0-6-0 No. 65714. The image appears to show the station building with three gable ends, however the left hand gable end belongs to the
adjacent Station Masters house, which was a two storey building.
This engine was built at Darlington in June 1900 as NER No. 459 and was withdrawn in January 1961. Of course the answer to my question is... the Derwent Valley Light Railway.
