3279 1936-06-27 Swindon
Peter Kerslake says "A fine image of "Duke" 3279 "Tor Bay" doubtless photographed from Swindon station platform her tender well filled all ready for her next duty.
The year is 1936 when Mr. Collett used the boilers, cabs and fittings of twenty eight withdrawn members of this class and matched then to a similar number of frame sets from withdrawn "Bulldogs" in what were unofficially to become known as the "Dukedogs" and which he needed for the Cambrian system in mid Wales, the requirement being for a locomotive light enough to traverse the renowned Barmouth bridge yet powerful enough to handle both passenger and freight rosters throughout the Cambrian, which they did with distinction for over twenty years, the last two being withdrawn in October of 1960."
