The 01 class 2-8-0 came about as an attempt by Edward Thompson in 1944 to create standardisation within LNER motive power. Basically a standard Diagram 100A boiler, as being produced for the new B1's, was fitted to the ageing ROD 04 frames together with new cylinders, cab and Walschaerts valve gear. The ROD tender was retained. No.63768 was 'new to traffic' in December 1945 and served well, lasting untill the summer of 1965 at Langwith Jct. when aquired for scrap by A Draper of Hull who cut it up by November.
