3442 1965-03-06 Robin Hoods Bay

Perhaps one of the most regrettable of railway closures was that of the scenic and challenging Yorkshire Coastal route including Filey, Scarborough via Whitby North Cliff to Redcar and thence to Darlington. In March 1965 the Stephenson and Manchester Locomotive Societies organised a 'Whitby Moors' rail tour. The motive power was the thankfully preserved Gresley ex-LNER 'K4' No. 3442 (pilot) and BR Peppercorn K1' No. 62005 (train). This combo ran from Market Weighton to Filey and continued via Scarborough as far as Whitby and then inland to York. The pair are at Robin Hood's Bay, surrounded (in the days when such things were possible) by a huge crowd of both locals, supporters and a dog!
