Peter Kerslake says quot;A smartly turned out 26020 gets a young enthusiast's attention here at Guide Bridge , just five miles out from Manchester London Road on the Woodhead trans Pennine route , this location being the calling point for passenger workings between Manchester and Sheffield for the nearby Ashton under Lyne.br/ This photograph clearly shows how the Class 76 ( EM1 ) locomotives were unusual in having their drawgear and buffers affixed to the leading face of the four wheeled bogie , rather than being attached to the locomotive's body itself , a feature which was not incorporated into the later EM2 design .br/ The reasoning behind this design was , with the locomotives being expected to work in a double headed formation as well as undertaking banking duties the impact and shock stresses whilst undertaking such duties would be confined to the bogies and not be transmitted to the locomotive bodies the two bogies also being connected by a shock absorbing cablequot;
