5243 1920s Newton Abbot

5243 1920s Newton Abbot

No 5243 at Newton Abbot shed c1925. It was allocated to Laira when new in 1924 until 1926, presumably for work along the main line to Newton and Exeter, I suspect they were too slow for banking turns, the bigger prairies being preferred.

This is supported by looking at the headcode on the buffer beam it is for a J class goods train - Through Goods, mineral or ballast stopping at intermediate stations so with this and facing this way it could be ready for working back to Laira.
